2 pm, Saturday, January 24, 2026 | Working Men’s Institute Museum and Library, New Harmony, Indiana
The Owen-Maclure 200th will launch its commemorative lecture series with The Boatload of Knowledge at 200: An Inaugural Bicentennial Lecture on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Working Men’s Institute Museum and Library in New Harmony, Indiana.
This program marks the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Philanthropist, celebrated as the “Boatload of Knowledge,” whose passengers—educators, scientists, artists, and reformers—brought transformative ideas to the developing Owen-Maclure community in 1826. Their influence helped shape New Harmony into a vital center for learning and social experimentation.
The event will feature remarks by Diane Sanders and Ryan Rokicki, Co-chairs of the Owen-Maclure 200th. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. Gerald Gutek, noted historian of education and author of several works on early American schooling. Dr. Gutek will examine the journey of the Boatload of Knowledge, the individuals aboard, and the lasting legacy of their contributions to New Harmony and beyond.
Light refreshments will be served.
This program is free and open to the public.
The Owen-Maclure 200th Lecture Series will continue throughout the bicentennial period, with programs currently planned every other month through June 2027, with the potential to expand to monthly offerings. Additional details will be announced in the coming months.
