About the event

This program marks the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Philanthropist, celebrated as the “Boatload of Knowledge,” whose passengers—educators, scientists, artists, and reformers—brought transformative ideas to the developing Owen-Maclure community in 1826. Their influence helped shape New Harmony into a vital center for learning and social experimentation.

The event will feature remarks by Diane Sanders and Ryan Rokicki, Co-chairs of the Owen-Maclure 200th. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. Gerald Gutek, noted historian of education and author of several works on early American schooling. Dr. Gutek will examine the impact of the Boatload of Knowledge on William Maclure’s design for American education and present an autobiographical commentary on its influence on his career as an educational historian.

Light refreshments will be served.

This program is free and open to the public.
