This program marks the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Philanthropist, celebrated as the “Boatload of Knowledge,” whose passengers—educators, scientists, artists, and reformers—brought transformative ideas to the developing Owen-Maclure community in 1826. Their influence helped shape New Harmony into a vital center for learning and social experimentation.

 

The event will feature remarks by Diane Sanders and Ryan Rokicki, Co-chairs of the Owen-Maclure 200th. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr. Gerald Gutek, noted historian of education and author of several works on early American schooling.
